This individual demonstrates competency in the delivery of care to a primarily adult population undergoing surgical, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures. Responsibilities may include assessment of oxygenation, ventilation and circulation, monitoring and treatment of pain, assisting with, and/or monitoring procedures, providing on-call coverage, administering complex IV therapy, and providing patient and family education and coordination of care, and other duties as assigned. The Operating Room Nurse is an indispensable member of the surgical team. He or she performs nursing activities during the intraoperative phase of the patients surgery. The operating room nurse provides continuity of care throughout the perioperative period, using scientific and behavioral practices with the eventual goal of meeting the individual needs of the patient undergoing surgical intervention. This process is dynamic and continuous, and requires constant reevaluation of individual nursing practice in the operating room. Broadly speaking, the Operating Room Nurse can perform one of two vital roles during surgery: 1) She (or he) can circulate outside the sterile field, performing such tasks as obtaining and opening up supplies, positioning and calibrating equipment, sending specimens to the laboratory, hanging medications, recording intraoperative events and data, and in general ensuring that the surgeon and others working at the surgical field have what they need; 2) He (or she) can scrub as a member of the team at the surgical field itself, handing instruments to the surgeon as necessary and helping to manipulate the patient and the wound to enable the surgeon to work effectively, as well as receiving instruments and supplies from the circulator. Nurses must be capable of circulating, or learn to circulate, but are encouraged to learn to scrub as well. The OR Nurse typically accompanies the patient from Procedure Arrival and Recovery to the OR itself, after answering any last minute questions from the patient or their family, and helps to position and prepare the patient on the table. Additionally, the nurse is responsible for helping to set up the room for surgery. The nurse often accompanies the patient back to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and reports relevant information to the PACU nurse. At Froedtert we have many generalist nurses, but most nurses eventually choose or are selected for a service pod. In others words, they specialize. This is an important aspect of their development as nurses. Pods include Neurosurgery / Ear Nose / Throat / Oral, Orthopedics/Plastic, Gynecology/Urology, General/ General/Endo/Oncolcology, Robotic, Transplant/Vascular and Cardiac/Thoracic Surgeries.
