If you're looking for a job to love, apply today. 40PRIMARY FUNCTION: The primary objective of the position within the organization is to provide effective management and sound leadership to the nursing team and function as an active participant in the interdisciplinary management of the facility. As the Director of Nursing Services, he/she is accountable for creating a team within his/her department that will distinguish itself within this facility and the industry as delivering excellent person-centered based services, ensuring complete medical records and ensuring resident/family satisfaction. In addition, the department will operate in accordance with current state and federal regulations and clinical standards of practice. In this role, the DNS will budget, plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operations of the Nursing Service Department. HOURS OF WORK: Full-time, variable shifts and days, including weekends and holidays. QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of an accredited RN program, BSN preferred, not required. Current CPR certification. Licensed as Registered Nurse in the State of Minnesota. Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check. Ability to pass back assessment specific to the DNS position. Three years of geriatric nursing experience with a minimum of two years of the three in a skilled nursing care facility, preferred. Minimum of three years in administrative/supervisory experience in health care setting, preferred. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to adapt to changing work needs and to demonstrate effective customer service to internal and external customers. Ability to manage employee performance, patient care delivery, and fiscal performance. Demonstrated ability in building collaborative relationships, coaching and mentoring others, and building effective networks. Acquires and applies knowledge of but not limited to nursing procedures, illnesses and behavioral health disorders. Maintains and safeguard entrusted confidential information. Ability to communicate effectively with residents, families and co-workers. Ability to function independently in situations that require professional nursing judgment. Ability to understand, support, and implement facility and organizational policies/procedures along with governmental regulations. Available and willing to work beyond regular hours of work. Demonstrates basic computer skills. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (list is not inclusive of non-essential or marginal tasks) Administrative Function: --- Specifically plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate and direct the Nursing Service Department in accordance with current rules, regulations, guidelines and strategic plan that govern this long-term care facility. --- Specifically develop, maintain and annually update and review written policies and procedures that govern the daily function of the nursing department. --- Assumes responsibility for Standards of Care and Practice set for the facility. --- Make written/oral reports/recommendations to the Executive Director as necessary/required, concerning the operation of the Nursing Service Department in your facility. --- Assume administrative authority, responsibility and accountability in the absence of the Executive Director. --- Maintain a reference library (i.e. PDR's, regulations, and facility policies) that will assist the department in meeting the day to day needs of the resident. --- Oversee and coordinate the development, maintenance and implementation of quality assurance programs. --- Participate in surveys (inspections) made by authorized agencies. --- Develop, implement and maintain a nursing service organization structure. --- Assumes 24 hours accountability for Nursing Department and delegates a responsible staff member to act on your behalf when absent from the facility. --- Participates in such outside activities as is deemed advantageous to enhance the public relations image of the facility. --- Facilitates ordering and maintaining nursing supplies that includes a system for ordering, inventory control and special needs ordering. --- Act as Charge Nurse, Case Manager, Infection Control/QA/Staff Educator, and/or MDS Coordinator when necessary. Committee Function: --- Participates on various committees of the facility (i.e. Infection Control, Safety, Quality Assurance, etc.) --- Participates in and attends department head meetings, etc., as scheduled or as may be called. Nursing Care Functions: --- Participate in selection of residents (or delegates function) for admission to the facility in cooperation with the facility Social Worker or designee. --- Provides the Executive Director with information relative to nursing needs of the residents and the department's ability. To deliver those services. --- Performs Quality Assurance Activities specific to facility's policies and procedures. --- Directs the development and completion of MDS/Care Plan by ensuring that each resident's MDS and plan of care are reviewed and updated per RAI guidelines as well as PRN. --- Develops, maintains and implements a system for managing and destroying narcotic medications within our facility along with the consulting pharmacist. --- Participates in reviewing resident events and ensuring the facility is in compliance with vulnerable adult reporting in cooperation with the facility Social Worker or designee. --- Oversees completion of and attachments to clinical medical records for the facility. Personnel Function: --- Assist in the recruitment and selection of personnel assigned to your area of responsibility. --- Determine departmental staffing needs necessary to meet the various departments' schedules and assign a sufficient number of personnel for each tour of duty. --- Recommend to the Executive Director the level of and the number to be employed. --- Participates with monitoring continuing education, certification of professional and non-professional staff as set forth by federal and state guidelines to ensure they meet current certification requirements with the Human Resource personnel and/or nursing scheduler. --- Interpret the department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors and government agencies as necessary. --- Delegate administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability to other personnel as deemed necessary to perform their assigned duties. --- Counsel, discipline personnel as necessary. --- Terminate employees when necessary, documenting and coordinating such actions with the Executive Director. --- Review and check the competence of personnel and make necessary corrections as required or that become necessary. --- Coordinates with other department supervisors and ancillary services to assure that care and service can be performed. Staff Development: --- Coordinate through Staff Development, the planning, conducting, scheduling, etc. of inservice training classes, on-the-job training and orientation programs for nursing service personnel. --- Specifically, participate in developing, planning, conducting, and scheduling in-service training programs that provide instructions on "how to do the job" and ensures a well educated nursing service department. --- Assure that all personnel attend and participate in training for required State and Federal and other appropriate training sessions pertinent to their work environment. Budget and Planning Functions: --- Assist in preparing, planning and developing the Department's budget for forecasting purposes and submit to the Executive Director for review, recommendation and approval. --- Assist in preparing, planning and developing the department's capital budget and submit to the Executive Director for review, recommendation, and approval. --- Maintain and review monthly current written records of department expenditures and assure that accurate reports/records are maintained to adequately reflect facility operational costs. Customer Service: --- Participates in Customer Service programs and activities. --- Promotes Person-Centered Care for the residents the facility serves within the nursing services department. Other Duties: --- Adheres to all Safety and Infection control policies and procedures. --- Performs all other duties or special assignments as directed by the Executive Director. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: --- Ability to reach above shoulder level, bend, squat, crouch, kneel, balance, push, pull, move and lift a minimum of 50 pounds. (List is not all-inclusive) See attached Physical and Environmental Requirements. --- Continuous simple manipulation skills as required to manipulate wheelchairs through doorways and move linen carts and so on. --- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching at desk level and overhead, fingering( picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling), fine manipulation as applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm, and maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling. --- Occasional climbing stairs, reaching to floor level, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and simple and firm grasp (applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm). --- Never climbing ladders, crawling, required to wear a respirator, subject to outside environmental conditions, subject to extreme cold (temp below 32 degrees), subject to extreme heat (temp above 95 degrees), subject to noise (noise level that requires the worker to shout in order to be heard), subject to vibration (oscillating movements of the whole body), subject to oils, subject to atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gasses, poor ventilation). --- Constant requirement for hearing, visual inspection, subject to inside environmental conditions, and subject to hazards (such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, infectious diseases, and blood-borne pathogens).
