DescriptionSALARY$40.138 - $57.342POSITION SUMMARYCoordinates
activities of personnel involved in estimating, designing, and
planning of various structure engineering projects. Under
direction, functions as lead professional engineer managing
projects of considerable complexity involving the selection and
application of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria for
the design, construction, and maintenance of CTA structural
systems.QualificationsPRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Approves or prepares detailed drawings, scopes, plans, designs,
and specifications for major projects in compliance with general
engineering principles and applicable policies, codes, and
ordinances.
- Serves as technical expert and engineering support on
construction projects.
- Monitors the design, implementation, and construction of
contractor and in-house job progress and resolves problems during
the planning, construction, cutover, start-up, and close-out
phases.
- Provides status reports to ensure that projects are delivered
on time, within budget, and according to CTA standards and
needs
- Approves or prepares specifications for project materials and
services. Acts as a liaison between various CTA departments,
contractors, consultants, manufacturers, and governmental
representatives ensuring projects conform to plans, specifications,
schedules, and budgets.
- Coordinates and integrates criteria and approach used in
construction projects with various CTA departments including Red
and Purple Modernization, Infrastructure Engineering, Vehicle
Engineering, Technology Engineering, Maintenance, and Transit
Operations.
- Coordinates, schedules, and conducts inspections of work sites
to verify compliance with contract requirements, assess project
status, identify potential problems, and recommend solutions to
keep projects within scope and budget.
- Assists with the development of design directives, design
criteria, and standard details to keep structural standards up to
date. Approves or prepares testing and acceptance procedures for
structural construction projects.
- Identifies, researches, evaluates, recommends, and develops new
structural technology.
- Assists in the development and administration of the CTA
Capital Construction and maintenance programs for the rail and bus
systems and their related infrastructure.
- Coordinates population of CTA's asset management and GIS
databases.

budget.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering with a
Structural Engineering concentration or a related field plus eight
(8) years of experience related to this position, or an equivalent
combination of training and experience, provided the degree
requirement is met.
- Must be a Registered Illinois Professional Engineer or
Registered Illinois Structural Engineer.
- Design experience in lieu of P.E. or S.E. Registration will be
considered.
- Experience in the design, construction and maintenance of
facilities.
- Valid State of Illinois driver's license.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, visual
acumen, manual dexterity and fingering for working with computer
keyboards.
- Physical ability to walk and limited climbing along rail system
tracks or electrified rail in dimly lit subways, elevated
structures, and expressway median to ensure personal safety.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
- Ability to operate an aerial lift, after proper safety
training. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Detailed knowledge of railroad and / or transit structure
design and maintenance is preferred.
- Detailed knowledge of structural engineering principles,
methods, and techniques.
- Detailed knowledge of materials, techniques, and municipal
codes and ordinances as applied to design, construction, and
maintenance of communications projects.
- Advanced skill using CAD and GIS applications (i.e. AutoCAD,
MicroStation, ArcView).
- Advanced math skills including Algebra, Calculus, and
geometry.
- Advanced skill using personal computer, engineering
applications, and data management software.
- Strong research, attention to detail, and problem solving
skills.
- Strong critical thinking skills to assess how one change can
affect the entire project.
- Strong project management skills.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to negotiate and resolve conflict.
- Ability to apply engineering knowledge to complex engineering
problems with versatility, judgment, and perception.
- Ability to organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate routine
engineering problems and provide practical and cost effective
solutions.
- Ability to adapt well to change.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Ability to manage moderately complex engineering projects of
significant magnitude.WORKING CONDITIONS
- General office environment.
- Works outdoors, in or near shop/garage/terminal areas and on
elevated, ballasted, and subway track areas adjacent to and
energized contact rails and moving trains.
- Travels within the Chicago Metropolitan area and works various
days and hours as assigned.
- Subject to prevailing weather conditions when conducting field
inspections.
- Occasionally required to travel to other locations in North
